Performers: Musicians of the Early Music Institute
Director: Thomas Binkley
Hildegard of Bingen was one of the most talented and influential women of her age. Born in 1098 of a noble family, in early childhood she was subject to visions and other unusual religious experiences. By the age of eight she was dedicated by her parents to the monastic life. She entered a hermitage attached to the Benedictine Monastery at Diessenberg where she was instructed by the abbess, Juta von Spanheim. When Juta died in 1136, Hildegard succeeded her and lived in the unobtrusive way that was typical of religious women of the period. The selections on this recording come from the liturgy of the Laudes for St. Ursula as they would have been performed in Hildegard's day.
